Megami Tensei
Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei
Kyuuyaku Megami Tensei was released in Japan on March 31, 1995 as the remaster port of Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei I and Digital Devil Story: Megami Tensei II, bundled in the same game for the SNES. The remaster of Megami Tensei I is a shorter and more popular speedrun and, given the current world record for Megami Tensei II utilizes the casino multiple times, it is likely to stay that way.
Megami Tensei I
Section titled “Megami Tensei I”Just like many of the Japan-exclusive megaten games, it remained a very niche speedrun for the longest time, with equi’s world record time standing for years. The main deterrent holding the runners back from learning this game was how risky the route was - it involved multiple sections of having to get lucky enough not to get wiped to random encounters, leading to runs filled to the brim with Chiron’s lovely face.
These changed over time as runners added small improvements to the route, mainly the work of mulsqi, the first to beat equi’s longstanding world record and who began closing in on the 1 hour mark.
In 2025, notable megaten runners such as Jonperi23 and mizusima40 picked up the game, which gathered the interest of many other runners and led to major improvements to the routes. The Kali route was put to the side in favor of the Odin route, which grinds for a bit longer at the zoma encounter spot in Bien to reach level 55 and fuse Ganesha, which consequently leads Rick to turn into Odin instead. The runner now no longer relies on Yumiko as much, and therefore doesn’t have to worry about raising her level, and Odin and Ganesha’s bulkiness helps when dealing with Lucifer.
Later into the year, mizusima40 developed a route that took advantage of the slots game in the casino in Bien. This resulted in the first ever time under 50 minutes to be achieved. This route used the resources acquired at the Casino to purchase stronger armor at the Infini Palace, afterwards skipping the armor pick ups at Infini Palace’s 2nd floor, recovering Rick and the White Dragon Orb, instead going straight to Lucifer after obtaining the Hinokagutsuchi. As we don’t have a healing demon, all the healing is done with beads received as a casino reward. This route is therefore incredibly dangerous.
During this time, it was concluded that skipping the White Dragon Orb was overall a better strategy, even for no casino runs. The White Dragon Orb is an optional item that prevents Lucifer from being able to use Diarahan during the fight. However, upon experimentation, it was concluded that there was a bug with the way that Diarahan worked, as it seemed that it only worked up to 4 times and, instead of healing Lucifer’s full HP, only healed about 500HP. This might seem like a lot, but given that Diarahan costs about 10MP to cast and Lucifer only has about 99MP, having Lucifer’s MP drained by Diarahan is a safer strategy than blocking Diarahan and giving him a full 99MP’s worth of Bufudynes and curses.
After mastering the casino as well, mulsqi decided the simpler casino route wasn’t risky enough and developed the Ruthless route, a route that skips collecting the Hinokagutsuchi and the zoma grind and that, after purchasing stronger equipment at Infini’s armor store, rushes straight to Lucifer. This route relies heavily on draining Lucifer’s MP before beginning to attack but, if successful, it’s an incredibly fast route.
In January of 2026, Jonperi23 developed the All Bosses route, being the first alt category run done for Megami Tensei I. This route fights 3 more boss fights than the original: Hecate, Seth and Loki.
On 2026/02/16, after much community discussion, the Casino and No Casino routes were finally seperated.
Megami Tensei II
Section titled “Megami Tensei II”Megami Tensei II is a much longer and more dangerous game than Megami Tensei I and, although it still has the casino and the Jack Frost Jr. trick, it has remained much more unappealing for runners to pick up.
Following the casino wave of 2025, mizusima40 developed a KMT2 route that made use of the casino multiple times for armor upgrades, which helps deal with KMT2’s scary difficulty jumps. This new route resulted in a time that nearly halfed the longstanding record of KMT2’s No Casino category from めし太郎.
